When the Maya abandoned the site, went unnoticed, literally, while the low dense jungle of the Yucatan covered it.

Ruta Puuc / Puuc Route

A variety of interesting overview of the Maya civilization awaits just 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Merida. It is known as the (hilly) route Puuc.
This includes the sites of Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil, X-Lapac, Labna, and the caves of Lol-tun.
In each of these sites Mayan pyramids have been rescued prevail even though other structures covered by the forest and other weeds, as they were found by early explorers and archaeologists.

  • Loltun
Starts the journey taking course towards the south following the signs to Uxmal. In Muna continues to indicate that the Lol-tun which is located on the left side. We recommend starting by Lol-tun, this way you can make a "tour" led to the caves in the "tours" of the morning hours (the only way to enter the caves), namely 9:30 a.m., 11: 00 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, 3:00 PM AND 4:00 PM.

The next destination (30 km along the road) is Labna, city of residence site sometime from 1500 to 2500 people and left between 750 and 1000 AD and which is currently being restored four of its buildings. Analyze when entering homes with roof huano (straw) home caregivers. Here, the palace has 70 "Chultunes" (Tanks for collecting rainwater) that are not visible. There is also a much-photographed arch artistically complicated.
  • X-lapak
. Seventeen kilometers continuing the winding road to reach X-Lapak (walls without mortar), a site with something like fourteen mounds and three half restored pyramids. This and the next destination (Sayil) are the least "manicured" on the route and in this way can be seen in conditions that were found these places. Observe the many carved stones thrown at the roadside.
  • Sayil
Thirteen kilometers later this Sayil "Place of the Ants". With health services. At the entrance is an outdoor museum protected by a roof huano (straw). }Note the huge stele dating between 800 and 1000 AD This place is home to an interesting palace, which has 90 chambers for something like 350 people. } From the highest level of the palace you can see the church of Santa Elena and beyond the path on the side of the mountain a tiny ruin named "The Nine Masks."
